Toastmasters and Altrusa Member ROSE WARING
Receives Channel 10 Leadership Award

By Zena Sultana Babao

She is assertive, outspoken, and dynamic. Sometimes controversial, she speaks her mind touching on issues others would not dare touch. She takes no flak from anyone, and yet she is compassionate and caring. She will champion your cause if she believes in it. She will fight for your rights, and the rights of the children and women of the world!

Her name is Rose Waring, and she is a long-time member and leader of two of the world's top international organizations: Toastmasters International and Altrusa International. Because of her extensive community leadership and involvement, she is this month's recipient of the Channel 10 Leadership Award.

Airing this Thursday, April 17, at 6:00 p.m., the taping of the Leadership Award segment was done last Wednesday, March 12, at the Omni Hotel's Marina Inn & Suites in Oceanside, California. At the taping, Rose said: "I thank each of you for taking time from your busy lives to share this happy time with me today. You have, individually and collectively, brought much joy and value into my life. Receiving this Channel 10 Leadership Award is a humbling experience for me! Thanks for all your support!"

Sharing with Rose her "humbling moment" were active and former members of Toastmasters International (TI), members of both TI and Altrusa International, as well as long-time and new Altrusa members, all of whom are Rose's friends.

Enjoying the event were currently active TI members: John Stark, Marty Rubenstein, Candace Camp, Mark Kramer, Norman Nomura, Peter Turner, Linda Meckler, Vera Mizell, Gerry Rose, Robert "Bob" Carpenter, and this writer; Jan Riggins, Phyllis Bourne, and Joyce Persichilli, all current members of TI and Altrusa; former Toastmasters: Adolf "Ski" Dombrowski, Donna Pierce, and Edith Carpenter; Altrusa's Immediate Past District Eleven Governor Beau Stocking from Burbank, California, and current District Eleven Director Denice Gilb; Altrusa member Michelle Ball, co-founder of the new Altrusa club of San Diego North County Coastal, and Betty Miller, an Altrusan for over 35 years; with new Altrusans: Marsha Sawyer and Dawn Miller.

Rose is one admirable lady! She possesses a keen awareness of what is going on around her, sensibility to other people's feelings and needs, and an ability to like and be liked by people.
She is also one busy lady! How she juggles her activities and apportions her time is no easy feat. I don't know how she does it, but she does it! She is constantly on the go, so it's hard to catch up with her. But she will take the time to be with you if you need her! She crisscrosses California because of the causes she fights for and the international educational and service organizations she belongs to.

In an interview with this writer, her top reason for helping others is that "there is a need." She has been helping others since she was a young girl. In her own words she said: "As a very lucky little girl I was wanted, loved, and nurtured by my parents and my maternal grandfather, and I learned from them how it was to champion those who were less fortunate than I. It was simply a natural way of life for me, with my feisty Scorpio personality."

When Rose was in high school and was asked to find a class motto, she chose this Sanskrit proverb: "Every today, well-lived, makes every yesterday a dream of happiness, and every tomorrow a vision of hope." Since then, she has made this proverb her personal mission, and has tried to follow it daily.

Toastmasters International (TI) is one her passion. She became a TI member way back in 1984 when she joined the Windjammers Toastmasters Club, District 33, in Las Vegas, Nevada. She served as president of Windjammers, and it became one of the "Top 10" clubs in the world. Her career path led her to San Francisco, where she mentored the Sierra Speakers Club, before moving on to District 5 here in San Diego.

In District 5, Rose became a Distinguished Area Governor for Area 3, "Toastmaster of the Year" for 1995-1996, and in the next years successfully worked the following leadership positions in District 5: Judging Chair, District Secretary, LGET Advisor, Central Division Governor, and Parliamentarian.

All her years in Toastmasters, from 1984 to the present, Rose has coached and mentored numerous clubs and members of TI. A great deal of what she does is done "behind the scenes", because she wants people to experience the emotional satisfaction that comes from the realization of a goal. She also wants TI members to gain personal knowledge and experiences needed for greater success. "Later," she said, "they can share with others what they have learned, thus the process of helping others will continue."

Anybody who is interested to know more about Toastmasters can go to the District 5 Toastmasters website: www.d5toastmasters.com. Those who are interested in attending any of the club meetings may contact this writer at this email address: blue-orchid@hotmail.com.
Another passion of Rose's is Altrusa International. She was invited to join this organization while managing a Black, Starr and Frost fine jewelry store in Las Vegas, Nevada. "I saw such value in this organization - the world's oldest Classified Service Club - founded by a woman, for women," Rose explained.

Altrusa now accepts both men and women into membership by invitation and application. However, the organization remains predominantly female. Here is Altrusa's mission: "To provide community service, develop leadership, foster International understanding, and encourage fellowship by an International network of executives and professionals in diversified career classifications."

Eleanor Roosevelt, who included active membership in the Altrusa Club of New York in her service-oriented life, once said: "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." Eleanor Roosevelt was responsible for Altrusa International's holding the first NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) seat at the United Nations table.

Rose is the co-founder of the newest Altrusa Club in San Diego North County Coastal, the fourth Altrusa Club in San Diego County. This new club covers the North Coastal areas from Rancho Penasquitos to Oceanside, including Vista and San Marcos. For further information regarding this club, you may contact: altrusasdncc@mindspring.com.

Other clubs are in Chula Vista, San Diego City, and Escondido. All clubs have literacy as their primary focus, and they provide hands-on service tailored within the communities where the clubs are located. Both the North County Coastal club and the Central San Diego club each support a chapter of "Project Linus." Learn more and find Rose chapter at: www.projectlinus.org.

Project Linus is a non-profit charitable organization with more than 400 chapters nationally. It provides security to children in crisis situations. Project Linus and Altrusa members collect quilts and blankets made of all-new washable materials donated by those who made them. The quilts and blankets are collected from the following drop-off points: Sowing Sisters sewing shop in Carlsbad, Bits & Pieces sewing shop in Escondido, and Temecula Valley sewing center in Temecula.

Then the Altrusa members sort, inspect, label and deliver the blankets to hospitals, assessment centers, churches, schools, and facilities for Public Safety. These donated items find their way to children and said items give children much comfort. If you need additional information about Altrusa, here's the email address: altrusasdncc@mindspring.com. Here's the website for Project Linus: www.projectlinus.org.
