District 5 Fall Conference 2008

Courage & Dreams: Keys to Success

Join us on
Friday, November 14 and Saturday, November 15 for our Fall Conference! Friday night's events take place at the Hubbs Seaworld Research Institute where you'll enjoy the District Table Topics Contest, a Hat Contest AND a special presentation by Vikas Jhingran, 2007 World Champion of Public Speaking. On Saturday, the fun and learning continue in Balboa Park - first at the beautiful Museum of Photographic Arts for the morning session, then to the San Diego Hall of Champions for lunch & the afternoon sessions.

The morning session includes our District Executive Council meeting and a presentation from Richard Snyder, Region II International Director.

During lunch we move (appropriately) to the Hall of Champions where we will hear from the inspirational trail-blazing first woman president of Toastmasters International, Helen Blanchard, followed by recognition of our newest DTMs.

The afternoon continues with presentations by Rob Swineford from Founders District and the 2007 World Champion of Public Speaking, Vikas Jhingran. But wait, there's more - how about the five funniest Toastmasters from District 5 whose sole purpose is to make us laugh during the Humorous Speech Contest!

Our Conference Speakers

  RICHARD SNYDER, DTM
International Director 2007-2009

Membership Retention

Have you ever wondered how some clubs traditionally have 80-90% Membership Retention while the average is closer to 70% worldwide. During his interactive workshop today, second year International Director Richard Snyder, DTM, is going to share some practical and proven ways to increase Membership Retention and the audience will brainstorm further ways to improve Membership Retention.

    Helen Blanchard, Past International President
Silver Linings
From the vantage point of a senior citizen and while
writing her life’s experiences in her biography “Breaking the Ice”, she discovered that those dark clouds can have silver linings. Sometimes it does take years to see it, but as Helen tells her story, you can reflect on your times of disappointments and disheartening events with a different perspective. Perhaps you also will find the sun shinning at the edges of every cloud.

Rob Swineford, ACS - Leadership for a Lifetime: The Unforgettable Fundamentals
Rob Swineford is an entrepreneur, youth coach and father who has been in customer service, sales, sales management and operations management for nearly 30 years. He has been a coach for 16 years and operates The Game of a Lifetime® Basketball Academy for 6 -14 year olds where he teaches through his academy slogan: “Life’s FundamentalsThrough Sport”. Rob joined Toastmasters in 2004 and is a qualified speaker with the Founders District Speakers Bureau. Rob runs the R.D. Swineford Group where he operates as a keynote speaker.

Vikas Jhingran, 2007 World Champion of Public Speaking
The Emotional Approach to Public Speaking
On August 18th 2007, Vikas Jhingran became the 76th World Champion of Public Speaking. In doing so he destroyed many myths; that great speakers are born not made, that engineers can’t be entertaining speakers and finally, that all MIT students are GEEKS. For Vikas this amazing achievement also confirmed a deeply held belief …. that great speeches, like movies, music and art, are just an emotional connection between the speaker and the audience. This belief has been the backbone of his speeches for many years and he continues to use this approach with great success.

This is a rare opportunity to meet and learn from an International Director, America's Coach, Past International President AND a World Champion of Public Speaking! Don't miss your chance to rub elbows for a mere $65 to attend everything - including both days, Friday & Saturday, all educational sessions, continental breakfast, lunch, Table Topics & Humorous Speech Contests! This is a serious bargin. Don't wait another minute - REGISTER TODAY!
